Pricing and subscription information

What is the payment model?

Access to skills4studycampus is available on a subscription basis. Subscriptions are available for an institution-wide site licence (i.e. for your entire university, college or company). Subscriptions are not available for individual students or for individual departments. Institutions can choose to sign-up to a 1 year or 3 year subscription and can choose from across our range of modules to build a bespoke subscription which is tailored to your institution's needs – the minimum selection is three modules.

How much does it cost?

We quote prices individually for each institution. You can select from our range of modules – the minimum selection is 3 modules and discount rises steeply if a large number of modules are selected. Pricing is tiered depending on the number of students in your institution – as you would expect it is cheaper for a small college with a small number of students than for a large university with lots of students. The price of subscription will also vary depending on whether you commit to a 3 year or a 1 year subscription period. Institutions signing up to a 3 year subscription for which they pay up-front will benefit from a generous discount. We are happy to send you a quote tailored to the situation in your institution. How do I register for a free trial?

For information on how to request a free trial click here . Free trial access is available to prospective institutional subscribers. We regret that trial access is not available to individual students – only to universities/colleges who are considering an institutional subscription. To set up a trial we will need to know the name of the institution, a contact name and email address for whoever will administer your trial. If you intend to access skills4studycampus via your VLE and wish to test during your trial we will also need the contact details for your VLE administrator.

My University has its own study skills resources, why should we subscribe?

Many universities and colleges have created excellent in-house resources. We have experience of working with a number of institutions who have done so. Some have maintained these resources and used our customisation and linking options to link between in-house material and skills4studycampus. Others have decided that skills4studycampus presents a cost-effective, comprehensive and long-term solution for engaging with students and providing study skills training. In these cases they have elected to focus on using skills4studycampus as the main point-of-call for students and staff, allowing them to spend time on providing extra advice or specific support.

We regularly update the modules on skills4studycampus meaning you can easily offer your students the latest developments in study skills training as part of your subscription.

My college/university doesn't subscribe – can I buy a personal subscription just for myself?

Unfortunately no – subscriptions to skills4studycampus are only available on an institution-wide basis. If you would like your library to have a subscription – please ask your librarian or tutor to contact us on digitalsales@palgrave.com.

Can I buy a site licence to skills4studycampus via a bookshop or library supplier?

No – all site licence subscriptions need to be bought directly from Palgrave.

Technical

Can we access skills4studycampus from our VLE?

skills4studycampus can be run and managed from several virtual learning environments. We have extensions that can be imported into Blackboard, Moodle and WebCT which can allow students to access via the VLE without having to log in twice.

skills4studycampus is flexible in that it can also be managed and used without a VLE. If you wish you can use the inbuilt administrator interface to manage student access and enrolments. The choice is yours!

What are the technical requirements for accessing and installing skills4studycampus?

skills4studycampus is an online application, hosted on Palgrave Macmillan servers, so students need web access to use it.

The interactive content in skills4studycampus is built in Adobe Flash, so students will need a Flashplayer (at least version 7) installed with their Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari browser. For users without a Flashplayer however there are alternative text only versions of the learning content.

Students have the option to download content, if they wish, in PDF, Word and Excel formats, as well as mp3 files, so they will need this software if they wish to download.

skills4studycampus can be set up as a plug-in to your VLE or separately, as a stand alone application.

VLE extensions are available for Blackboard, Moodle and WebCT.

These will need to be downloaded from the skills4studycampus resource and then installed onto your VLE by an administrator.

If you choose to set up access as a stand alone application outside of your VLE you can allow students to login using their home institution (Shibboleth) or Athens login. Please note that OpenAthens and Shibboleth authentication are only available at UK institutions. Alternatively students can self register using a site specific username and password, or you can import details using a simple csv file upload.

Can students be split into groups?

Yes. Depending on your setup option, student accounts can either be bulk imported at the start and arranged into groups, or they can be arranged at a later date once students have registered on the site.

Can the resource be used with students who have been accepted on to courses but are yet to be enrolled at the University?

If you enable access for pre-enrollment students to your online resources through the same setup option as you have chosen for skills4studycampus, then yes, we can discuss this option with you. We also have the free taster section available which many institutions like to promote.

Does skills4studycampus meet accessibility standards?

skills4studycampus has been developed in accordance with W3C guidelines, and comes with several options for alternative modes of learning and navigation. Some of the key steps we've taken to increase accessibility are below.

  • Students can proceed through the learning content using a screen reader, and navigate using a keyboard if required. Jump links have been positioned at the top of pages so it is possible for users to access the important sections of screens
  • Activities are visual, so there are alternative text treatments for users who are unable, or do not wish to, work through the visual activities. The text only versions of the section pages will help students who are struggling to work through a complex activity or finding a font style or colour difficult to see on screen.
  • Professionally recorded narration of the learning material is available throughout the resource on section pages. Audio versions offer the same content as can be read on screen so students who work in this way will not miss out on any learning points.
  • The site offers high levels of personalisation, including the ability to adjust font sizes and colours and make background colour changes. The use of italicised, underlined and bold text has been kept to a minimum, whilst still following standard expectations for links and headings.

Can I customise skills4studycampus?

Yes! Administrators can use an editing tool to add text, images and links at key points in the resource and on the learning pages themselves. This functionality allows you to integrate information that is specific to your institution - for example, you may wish to promote your study skills centre, or flag up local practices. The site can also be set up so the logo of your institution appears on the homepage, and in the bottom left-hand corner of every page that students see. skills4studycampus has been designed to be a comprehensive resource so that you do not need to add much material to it.

Is the content in skills4studycampus the same as The Study Skills Handbook?

The book and the e-learning resource are developed by the same team and are based on the same teaching philosophy (pioneered by Stella Cottrell) but the coverage is different and has been tailored for the online environment.

skills4studycampus has a total of eleven modules which focus in-depth on the study skills students need to succeed in their academic studies and beyond. skills4studycampus focuses on interactive, personalised learning with many practice and reinforcement activities, a personal learning journal, diagnostic tests and assessment exercises. Allowing students to take an active role in developing and honing their study skills.

If you or your students like using The Study Skills Handbook and other titles by Stella Cottrell then we think you should take a look at skills4studycampus, as the resource is a great complement to our print titles.

How is Stella Cottrell involved in skills4studycampus?

Stella Cottrell was consulted at key stages in the process of planning and creating skills4studycampus, and continues to be involved with the site. Our editors worked with a team of e-learning specialists to adapt Stella's work for the online medium. They added many new activities, tests and examples but remained faithful to Stella's successful teaching philosophy which is based on Stella's years of experience working closely with students.

Is the content PDP friendly?

Yes! Through the personal learning journal, students are encouraged to record what they have learnt, including their thoughts and feelings along the way, and to note useful strategies which they wish to try in their own work. The journal entries are saved on the site, and can also be downloaded or printed. Students are encouraged to complete diagnostic tests at the start of each module to help them assess their skills, and to identify which sections will be of particular benefit to them based on their answers. Reflective thinking is encouraged once students have completed a section of a module and suggestions are provided to help them progress. Module assessments upon completion allow students to further analyse their skills and chart their improvement.

How can we help with roll out and promotion?

Our dedicated account support executive will help you find the best set up option for your institution and will liaise with your IT department to set up the resource. They will work closely with you throughout your subscription to help you get the most out of the functionality of the resource and will be on hand to assist you with the running of usage reports.
